Budget Solar Hot Water System Kit

The budget solar installation kit comprises of the following:
- 20 tube 47mm vacuum tube solar panel - manifold type (SFB20-47). (See details below).
- Roof mounting kit. (See details below).
- 65cm Retro-fit Coil - to replace existing 2.25" top-mount immersion heater.
- TDC2 controller with digital temperature display. (See details below).
- 5 litres antifreeze. This is neat propylene glycol with additive package. The recommended dilution is 40% (providing total volume of 12 litres).
- Circulation pump and isolation valves. (See details below).
- Pressurised system Kit - (including filling loop, isolation valves and double check valve, pressure gauge and pressure relief valve). (See details below).
- 10m of 10mm diameter Armaflex - high temperature insulation.
- 10m of 10mm copper pipe.
- Solar Filling Kit. This is used for filling pressurised solar systems with antifreeze/water mixture and holds up to 8litres. It is a low cost filling system that works quickly, efficiently and by hand. The kit includes compression fitting/expansion vessel attachment and instructions.
There are a few other items that you will usually need to complete the installation - pipe clips, pipe fittings and reducers, solder etc). Some soldering is normally required, although the use of 10mm copper minimises the number of joints and therefore the amount of soldering involved. In fact, it is possible to avoid soldering altogether if compression joints are used throughout.
The 20 tube solar panel is a high efficiency 47mm double wall evacuated tube solar collector, this part of the kit includes:
- 20 bottom rail mounted tube cups.
- 1 tube of heat conducting paste.
- 2 side rails.
- 1 bottom rail.
- 1 set of nuts, bolts and washers for assembly.

The SFB panel is the best choice for the UK. The panel is considered to be one of the most cost-effective on the market, and performs extremely well in the UK climate. Its slimline design suits UK architecture, and in most cases, it should be considered 'permitted development' - meaning that you do not need to apply for planning permission if you wish to fit these panels to your roof. The SFB panel has a very low heat capacity, containing only 1 - 1.5litres of water inside the manifold. This allows the panel to heat up quickly when the sun starts to shine, and minimises heat losses at night. It is also much lighter than the integrated tank designs, making it much more suitable for load-bearing roof timbers. It should provide you with free hot water for at least 6 months of the year and will strongly contribute thereafter.
It has the following attributes:
- Suitable for pressurised systems.
- High efficiency solar collector using heat pipe evacuated tubes.
- Can be used in all climates.
- Reliable and efficient with twin-wall glass solar tubes.
- Copper heat pipes for rapid heat transfer.
- Easy plug-in installation for mounting on the roof or at ground level.
- Maintenance free.
- Suitable for high pressure water (up to 8bar / 116psi).
- Corrosion resistant silver brazed copper header.
- Frame material: 304 2B grade stainless steel.
- Casing material: 304 BA or AB stainless steel.
- Excellent insulator in glass wool.
- Collectors may be connected in series to increase water heating capacity.
- Tubes easily replaced if broken and it can still be used with broken tubes.
- Ideal for commercial solar water heating applications.
- Expected Lifetime >25years.
- 'Passive Solar Tracking' - maintains heat output regardless of sun's position in the sky.
- BSEN 12975 Approved.
The pitched roof mounting kit is suitable for 10 and 20 tube solar panels. The kit comprises of:
4 x 750mm stainless steel flexible straps.
4 x nuts, bolts and washers.
The four stainless steel roof mounting straps are designed to slide under the roof tiles and screw into the roof joists. One strap attaches to each corner of the frame. These are also suitable for slate roofs.
The TDC2 controller with digital temperature display details are as follows:
- Dimensions: 155x113x50mm
- High-contrast lighted display with extensive full-text and graphic mode.
- Self-explanatory operation via 4 soft-key entry keys.
- Support for initial parameter setting with integrated setup assistants.
- Various collector, storage and frost protection programs.
- Special start logic for vacuum tube collectors and self-dumping systems.
- Data storage unit with comprehensive statistics and graphic analysis for long-term monitoring of the system.
- Function control by simple heat metering.
- Error memory and analysis with date and time.
- Menu blocker against unintentional setting changes can be activated in important menus.
- Customer-specific device designs and expansion options, such as RS485, Ethernet, 4...20mA, relay for alarm messages on request.
- Attractive housing with various installation possibilities.
The circulation pump plus isolation valves is a 3-speed circulation pump (approx 40w, 60w, 80w)and a pair of brass ball-valve isolation valves. It is mains powered for solar circuits. The measurements and weight of the pump are:
H - 130mm
H1 - 105mm
L - 130mm
G - 1 - 1.5"
B - 130mm
Net Weight - 2.7kg
The Pressurised system kit details are as follows:
- Size: 315 x 270mm
- Connection: 0.75"
Most solar systems require a pressurised system kit - this allows the panel to be mounted at the highest point in the system, which is normally mandatory if the panel is mounted on the main roof of a house. The WindPowerUK pressurised system kit is designed to make installation of a sealed system as easy as possible, and includes the following components:
- Filling loop (including double check valve, flexible hose and shut-off valve).
- Pressure gauge 3 bar pressure relief valve.
- 12 litre expansion vessel including mounting bracket.
Manufactured from carbon steel, the vessels are coated with a protective epoxy paint and have a carbon steel clenched flange. Attached to this flange inside the vessel is a fixed SBR rubber bag shaped membrane with the opening of the bag secured to the flange to prevent the water coming into contact with the metal walls of the vessel.
The Armaflex high temperature insulation details are as follows:
- High temperature insulation for solar use.
- 10mm internal diameter.
- 13mm wall thickness.
- Suitable for up to 175°c constant temperature or up to 230°c for short periods.
- Remains flexible at high temperatures of up to + 150°C and low temperatures down to - 200°C.
- UV-resistant and can be installed outside without additional protective measures.
- Class 1 resistance to flame spread in accordance with BS 476 Part 7 test procedure.
- Built-in vapour barrier prevents condensation.
- Improved resistance against oil.
- Reduced smoke development in the event of fire.
- Lightweight and flexible: quick and easy installation with low maintenance requirements resulting in time and cost savings.
